I don't ordinarily gush about a mod, but this has both everything good Zero Hour had, whilst - against all odds - making it better. Power balance between the various factions has also been improved - and Shockwave adds well over a hundred new units to toy with! Truly, the game has something for everyone, and it's moved from the older sort of "balance" that the original Zero Hour had - where some factions had some advantages but disadvantages - to a much different sort of balance in that every faction has tons of toys unique to it to play with, from Demo GLA's Mantis Tanks to the air-droppable tanks deployed from the Air Force US. Familiar generals are tweaked quite a bit, offering new units that have lots of useful features - literally no faction plays like the others, which is quite unique in and of itself. Shockwave brings the total number of playable generals to fifteen, and adds tons of new content. It takes what was already great about Zero Hour, balances it, and adds tons of new weapons, options, and units for each and every faction from Vanilla to the new kids on the block. Additionally, the different Generals were supposed to be far different from one another, as opposed to the "Different flavor of Vanilla" they were in Zero Hour.Įnter Shockwave, which is one of the best Mods I've ever played. Leang's changes weren't flippant in Zero Hour, however - 2 other generals were cut out entirely - General Irondside for the US, who was supposed to be armor-focused, and General Deathstrike for the GLA (who is mentioned several times in the GLA Campaign), who was supposed to be salvage-focused. In the original setup for Zero Hour, Leang was just a regular general - she was supposed to be a Napalm (and artillery)-focused general (much as Tao is Nuke-focused, Kwai is Tank-focused, and Fai is Infantry-focused). What many are not aware of is that Leang was not always, as Steve once eloquently put it, the Chinese Bullshit General (In Zero Hour, she's the last boss and has basically every useful construction option and every superweapon. Most who have played through Zero Hour's General's Challenge mode have seen the "Boss" of Generals' Challenge mode, General Leang. You may not be aware of it, but Generals - Zero Hour was originally supposed to be a lot more in-depth. When he mentioned new generals, I was hesitant - until I heard more. I wasn't really all that interested (Relic's Soulstorm bullshit and learning that Zero Hour wasn't as balanced as I thought were only too vividly-recalled in my mind), until he began to rave about how well-balanced it was and how good it played. Putting it bluntly, this knowledge made me a sad panda.Īnyway, soon after this, Mouse was going on in #Jaimas about the Shockwave mod. To say that we learned that the game was hideously imbalanced is an understatement several match-ups were flat-out impossible, the USA was proved to be way too vulnerable to economy interdiction, China was proven to be OMGWTFLOL-level strong, and so on. This joyful ignorance came to an end as Stuffman showed me some top-tier replays of Zero Hour. It was a beautiful relationship for us, with a game that I felt was awesomesauce for its time. For a while I held it up as a shining example of RTS gaming - few games of its type have my friends and I played nearly as much (with the possible exception of Age of Empires 2).
